TRUCK KILLS S. L. WOMAN

Mrs. Myrtle Jessie Baker Dies in Hospital of Skull Fracture

Mrs. Myrtle Jessie Baker, 43, wife of E. D. Baker, 454 Fifth East street, was fatally injured when she was struck by a Tribune truck, driven by Max M. Bishop, 20, of 1336 East Broadway, at 9 a.m. Sunday on Fifth East street, north of Fifth South street. Mrs. Baker died 25 minutes later.

Bishop, who reported to police immediately after the accident, was detained for inquiry, but no charge was placed against him. He was released at 12:30 p.m., after assuring Chief W. L. Payne he would report Tuesday morning.

Mrs. Baker suffered a fractured skull and fractures of both legs. She was taken to the emergency hospital by a motorist, who left the public safety building without revealing his identity.

Bishop told Traffic Patrolman H. C. Peirce, the investigator, that he was accompanied by Eccles Mangum, 716 Lake street, and was driving north on Fifth East street, a car preceding him by about 30 feet.

Just after crossing Fifth South street, Bishop said, he saw the woman standing about 10 feet from the east curb, awaiting the passing of the car ahead of the truck.

When the first car passed, Mrs. Baker started toward the west curb, the truck driver reported. Bishop said he swerved the truck to the east, but Mrs. Baker stepped back and was struck by the left front fender, being carried a distance.

Mangum told police substantially the same story as that related by Bishop.

Mrs. Baker is survived by her husband; six children: Helen, Robert, Harry, Marjorie, Billie and Jack; two sisters, Hazel and Dorothy Curran of Long Beach, Calif., and one brother, Harry Curran of Twin Falls, Idaho.
