Sarah Truitt Kirby (Sally), of 2423 Springmoor Circle, Raleigh, died suddenly on January 2, 2017. Sally was born on April 26, 1934 in Hamilton, Ohio, the only child of John Kenton Truitt and Mary Brown Truitt.

Sally is predeceased by ex-husband James Robert Kirby (Jim), survived by her daughter Elizabeth (Beth) K. Hartley (Chuck), her grandson Robert James Bear, her granddaughter Sarah Bear Honeycutt (Jordan) and her great-granddaughter Jaylee Nicohl Honeycutt. She loved all of them dearly, and saw them often, as all live in the Cary/Raleigh area.

Sally grew up in Oxford, Ohio and graduated from McGuffey High School in 1951. She attended Duke University during her first two years of college, then transferred to Indiana University where she graduated in 1955. Upon graduation she took a job on the west coast, where she met and married Jim Kirby and gave birth to their only child, Beth. They soon relocated to Sally's childhood home, Oxford, Ohio, where they resided until Beth finished high school.

Sally was a complex woman. Smart, outspoken, and a business owner before women-owned businesses were common. She and Jim co-owned Young Villagers, an upscale children's clothing store in Oxford, before returning to college to obtain her Masters Degree and teach accounting at Miami University . She went on to become a licensed CPA, and went to work for Coopers & Lybrand before eventually relocating to Cincinnati and opening her own CPA practice in Montgomery, Ohio.

Sally's greatest love was family and travel. At age 51, with no warning, she found herself the single parent of her two grandchildren (ages 3 and 1) while her daughter struggled with illness. Each year, she and a friend (who was also raising a grandchild) would set off on a 3-week grand adventure traveling all over the United States. Both Robb and Sarah traveled to more than 40 of the 48 contiguous states with their grandmother, over a period of seven years.

Sally also loved to sing – she sang with the Queen City Chorus (Sweet Adelines International) for many years, and then, upon retiring, relocated to Indianapolis to become a member of the Capital City Chorus (also SAI) and compete at the International level.

Sally's final move was to Raleigh, again to be near family (Beth, Robb, and Sarah had all relocated to the Triangle area between 2002 and 2006), and she became a Springmoor resident. She often remarked to her daughter that summer camp as a kid was the only place she could remember loving as much as Springmoor. She was an avid reader and participated in several book clubs, as well as volunteering at the library. She also loved the theater trips and other outings.

A service celebrating her life and resurrection will be held on Monday, January 9, 2017 at 11:00am, Springmoor Life Care Retirement Community, 1500 Sawmill Road, Raleigh, NC 27615.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions be made in Sally's memory to The Springmoor Endowment, 1500 Sawmill Road, Raleigh, NC 27615.
