Edward was a member of the infamous Donner Party, that became trapped while crossing the Sierra Nevada mountains during the winter of 1846-1847. He was rescued by the First Relief.

In later life, he was a prominent rancher and farmer, who owned land in San Benito County and surrounding counties. He was a noted horseman.
