He was ordained a minister in the Lone Tree Mennonite Church on February 26, 1893 by Elder John Holdeman. According to the Lone Tree Congregation entry in the "Histories of the Congregations" (of the Chrch of God in Christ, Mennonite), he was present when John Holdeman fell seriously ill in 1900 and it is said Elder Holdeman "died in his arms."
