Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Mish Funeral Home in North Bakersfield, for John E. (Pop) Hughes, 88. of 3020 Sheley Lane, who died Aug. 30, after a lengthy illness in a Bakersfield hospital. Rev. Justin Knorr of the Bible Baptist Church will officiate, and cremation will follow, with interment to follow at a later date in the Hillcrest Memorial Park. Mr. Hughes was born July 8, 1874 in Knobnoster, Mo., and had lived in California since 1925 and in Bakersfield for the past six years. He was a utility man for the Bank of America at Hermosa Beach, retired. He was a member of the First Baptist Church at Redondo Beach, and a former member of the Knobnoster, Mo., Baptist Church. A member of the Masonic Lodge. F&AM, Knobnoster, Mo., and the IOOF at Knobnoster, Mo. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Erma Beatty of Knobnoster. Mo., and Bernice Hulsey of Little Rock, Ark.; a son, Elmer L., of Henderson. Nev.; also a granddaughter. Mrs. Ruth McVaugh of Bakersfield and six other grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. Mish Funeral Home is North Bakersfield is in charge.
