Carl Gustav Herbert Laurin was born on September 27, 1857, in Visby, Gotland, Sweden, the child of Olof Petter Reinhold and Maria Emanuella . Carl was a stonecutter by trade. He married Hilda Ingebory Johnson on April 16, 1885, in Rockport, Massachusetts. They had nine children in 20 years. He died on July 11, 1930, in Lowell, Massachusetts, at the age of 72.
