The Edson Cemetery was laid out in 1845 after a vote of the City Council to create another public burial ground. It is laid out on a strict grid, with approximately 45 squares (or in some cases triangles) contained on the triangular site. The cemetery was named for the rector of the St. Anne's Church. Although the site is unrelieved by topography or interesting street design, two small buildings are of architectural interest. The earliest, a small Gothic chapel is of rough-faced granite. A later shingle-clad structure is used as an office.

The Massachusetts Historical Commission refers to this cemetery in MACRIS as LOW.806 Edson Cemetery.

This cemetery is referred to as GR4 Edson Cemetery in the "Vital Records of Lowell Massachusetts to the end of the year 1849".
