Mary Vicini Tonielli was one of the many young girls and women hired by Radium Dial Company in the first half of the 20th century to paint luminous clocks and watches. An Italian-American woman who came to America as a baby, she was first hired in 1922 at the age of 13. She died in 1930 of a radium-related illness at the age of 21 , leaving behind her husband of less than two years, Joseph.

The deaths of Mary and a number of other Radium Girls ultimately led to a ban on the use of radium paint and a ban on the "lip-pointing" technique which sent so many to an early grave.
