Gary “Dean” Hillman, 78, of East Peoria, passed away at 4:58 pm Tuesday, December 27, 2016 at Unity Point Health Methodist in Peoria.
He was born May 26, 1938 in Pleasant Hill, IL to the late Duane and Zoe Merriam Hillman. He married Kay Goodin in Pittsfield, on June 30, 1966, she survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Kelley Ann (Rodney) McCartney of Bloomington, and Connie Sue (Kip) DuBois of Metamora; four grandchildren, Jennifer and Josh McCartney, and Sara and Emma DuBois; two great-grandchildren, Maddie and Milah McCartney; two brothers, Earl of Pleasant Hill, Frank (Cathy) of Danvers; one sister, Joy Hillman of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one son, Kenneth Wayne Smith.
Dean graduated from Pleasant Hill High School in 1956 and enlisted in the Air Force. While stationed in Japan at Johnson Air Base he was a member of the base pistol team. In 1959 he won the All Pacific Air Force Championship, and the All Service Pacific Championship. Later that year shooting in the World Wide Air Force Pistol Matches in San Antonio, TX he won the World Wide Provost Marshal Trophy which goes to the highest shooting air policeman.
He was a member of the N.R.A. and joined the River Valley Sportsmen’s Club in 1976. He was employed by Cilco for 30 years, retiring in 1996.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and hiking in the parks with Kay. He liked most sports but loved football.
Dean loved his wife and family very much and thanked them for all the help in the latter part of his life.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Unity Point Hospice.
Cremation rites have been accorded. Dean’s memorial service will be at Noon on Friday, December 30, 2016 at Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington with Pastor Keith Thibo officiating. Family will receive friends two hour prior to services from 10am to Noon Friday at the funeral home. Inurnment will be at Crescent Heights Cemetery in Pleasant Hill at a later date.
