Mrs. Anastasia B. Shankey, long known in Rockland County for her activities in benevolent work, died Saturday at her home, 7 Allison Avenue, Haverstraw. She was 85 years old and had been in failing health for some time.

Mrs. Shankey was the widow of John F Shankey, prominent Haverstraw businessman and brick maker, and twice sheriff of Rockland County, who died in 1922. She was born in Grassy Point, a daughter of Thomas P. Burke and Katherine Butler Burke.

An alumna of the Academy of the Holy Family, Baltic, Connecticut, Mrs. Shankey was prominently identified with lay and religious charitable organizations serving this area. She was appointed to the Rockland County Board of Child Welfare in 1915 and served gratuitously as secretary until the board was abolished by state law in 1946. In 1925 Mrs. Shankey was appointed by the late Patrick Cardinal Hayes as the director of the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women of Rockland County. She also had served as first president of the Catholic Women's Benevolent Association of Haverstraw and held his post for 16 years. She was also a member of the King's Daughters Society and the Lady Foresters of America.

Mrs. Shankey was survived by six sons and five daughters. Her sons are Thomas Vincent of Haverstraw; Joseph I., of Washington, DC; Victor J., supervisor of the town of Haverstraw; Lawrence A., of South Orange, New Jersey; Richard A., of San Juan, Puerto Rico, and James B., of Pearl River. Her daughters are Mrs. Thomas Kalligan of Yonkers, Mrs. Harry B Finnegan of New York City, Miss Margaret C Shankey of Haverstraw, Mrs. Anastasia Shankey of White Plains, and Sister Frances Jerome, O.P., the Dominican Order, at Albertus Magnus College, New Haven, Connecticut. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

A solemn high mass of requiem was celebrated Wednesday morning at 10:30 o'clock in the Church of Saint Peter and interment was in Saint Peter's cemetery.

Responses for the mass were sung by male quartet of Saint Vincent Ferrer Church, New York City, accompanied by Professor Constantino Yon, organist at the church.
