THOMAS VINCENT SHANKEY, was the eldest of twelve children. Everyone called him "Vince" to avoid confusion, because one of his uncles was Thomas L. Shankey (1862-1932) and his grandfather was also Thomas Shankey (1818-1902). Vince died Monday, June 19, 1972 at his home on Route 9W in West Haverstraw.

Vince was a lifelong resident of the North Rockland area, and for many years operated the Shankey Ford Agency, which was the oldest car dealership in New York State when he retired in 1963 after 51 years in business. The agency is now known as Haverstraw Ford.

Shankey was a member of the Haverstraw Knights of Columbus and the Elks.
He was the husband of the late Mrs. Estelle Dolan Shankey and father of Victor J of Monsey, Mrs. Geraldine Hoyer of West Haverstraw and Mrs. Mary O'Brien of Maywood, New Jersey. At his death, he was also survived by three brothers and two sisters, Lawrence A of Haverstraw, Richard aka "Gus" of Stony Point, James B of Florida, Miss. Anastasia Shankey and Mrs. Catherine Finnegan of White Plains; 16 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was brother of the late Victor J Shankey who was supervisor of Haverstraw for nearly 40 years.

A mass of the resurrection was celebrated at Saint Mary's Church Thursday at 10:00 a.m. with interment following at Saint Peter's Cemetery. Note: the year of birth and name on the headstone are both incorrect. Vince was born Aug 29, 1885 (not 1886) and his true name was Thomas Vincent (not Vincent A.). See the military draft registration from 1918.
