His funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 23, 2015, at First Baptist Church in Cherryville with Rev. Vince Hefner officiating. Burial will follow in the Cherryville City Cemetery with Rev. Perry Holleman and military rites by American Legion Post 100 of Cherryville. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
Mr. Cornwell was born August 24, 1923, in Lincoln County, to the late Lewis Guy and Carrie Huett Cornwell. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two brothers, Lewis Guy Cornwell, Jr. and Joe Bill Cornwell and three sisters, Elizabeth Taylor, Alma Moss and Lorene Elmore. He served in the United States Marines during World War II and then later worked for, and retired from, Carolina Freight Carriers. He was also the owner and operator at Cornwell Brothers Company. Mr. Cornwell was a member of First Baptist Church of Cherryville, was former Sunday School Superintendent, Chairman of the Board of Deacons, member of the American Legion Post 100 of Cherryville, past Master of Masonic Lodge 505 AF & AM, Scottish Bodies and Oasis Temple, Charlotte, Past Worthy Matron of Chapter 156 Order of Easter Star, and Past President of the Cherryville Lions Club.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Sipe Cornwell of the home; a brother, Walter Cornwell of Hickory; and a sister, Betty Schrum of Lincolnton.
