Ruth E. Solem, age 60, passed away at her home, surrounded by her loving family and friends, on Monday, August 8, 2016. Memorial Services: 11:00 A.M. Thursday, August 11, 2016, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Brooklyn with Fr. Corey Close officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date. The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 P.M. Wednesday, August 10, 2016 at Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn with a Scripture Service at 8 P.M. A memorial fund has been established.
Ruth is survived by her husband, Dennis “Skip” Solem; sons, Travis (Michelle Waddle) of New London, Lukas Ray (Amanda) of Sparks, NV, Jakob (Rachel) of Las Vagas, NV; a daughter Megan Ann (Joshua Harrison) of Brooklyn; grandchildren, Claire, Bryce, Ethan, Austin, Kyleigh and Harper; brothers, Alvin (Barb) Kriegel of Cedar Rapids, LaVerne Kriegel (Roseanne) of Brooklyn, and Paul Kriegel of Brooklyn; sisters, Nancy (Art) Miner of Des Moines, Virginia (Bob) Ricketts of Indianola, Dee (Boo) Kron of Riverside, Barbara (Jim) Kelley of Ames , Rita (Larry) Petersen of Brooklyn, Janice (John) Beaderstadt of Brooklyn, Ann (Andy) McCulley of Brooklyn, and a sister-in-law Mary Ellen Kriegel of Tama.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Raymond Kriegel and Skip’s parents, Marvin and Dorothy Solem.
Ruth Ellen Kriegel was born November 30, 1955 in Grinnell, Iowa, the daughter of Lloyd Kriegel and Claras Henle Kriegel. She graduated from BGM High School with the Class of 1974. She married Skip Solem on April 2, 1977 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Brooklyn. Ruth worked at GTE for 18 years, then operated Carpet Corner in Brooklyn for 7 years. She also worked for American Cleaning Systems, Iowa Telecom, Windstream, and TPI in Newton. Ruth was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, who enjoyed attending to her children and grandchildren. She spent much of her time at their many events such as sports and dance recitals. She liked to play cards, especially Canasta and Skipbo, and was often accused but never proven of cheating. She also liked dominos, cross stitch and reading. She loved watching her hummingbirds in her flower garden and enjoyed cooking for her family and friends.
