Norbert James Schmidt, age 79, of Readlyn, Iowa, died Wednesday, December 21, 2016, at Unity Point Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.

Norbert was born on March 11, 1937, in rural Fairbank, Iowa, the son of Otto Carl and Norma Helen Clara (Poock) Schmidt. Norbert was baptized on March 28, 1937, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Klinger and confirmed there on March 18, 1951. He attended Immanuel Lutheran School, Klinger to the 8th grade and then Readlyn High School graduating in 1955. Norbert then went to work at Rath Packing in Waterloo.

In the summer of 1956, Norbert was drafted into the United States Army. He was honorably discharged in 1958 and returned to work at Rath Packing. On August 9, 1959, Norbert was united in marriage to Audrey Happel at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Klinger. In 1960, Norbert quit Rath Packing and started farming and would farm until his passing.

Norbert was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Klinger, where he served in many offices, he also was a member of several dairy boards including, Bremer County Dairy Board, Dairy Council, AMPI, Dairy Management Inc., Midwest Dairy Association, and the Midland Board. Norbert enjoyed watching sports, dancing, singing, playing bridge and cards, and bowling, however, what he enjoyed most was his family, especially his grandchildren.

Norbert's memory is honored by his wife Audrey of Readlyn; four children, Jeff (Penny) Schmidt of Readlyn, Scott Schmidt of Readlyn, Pam (Keith) Meier of Billings, Montana, and Barry (Anne) Schmidt of Sycamore, Illinois; nine grandchildren, Holly (Adam) Bierstedt, Heidi (Duane) Foster, Zach (Whitney) Schmidt, Nolan Schmidt, Garret Meier, McKenna Meier, Noah Schmidt, Allison Schmidt, and Adam Schmidt; three great-grandchildren, Emersyn Bierstedt, Elijah Bierstedt, and Kambrii Foster; two brothers, Roland Schmidt of Readlyn and Jerry (Karol) Schmidt of Hudson; a sister, Delores Bourke of Waverly; a sister-in-law, Luann Happel of Readlyn; and a brother-in-law, Gordon (Ruth) Happel of Lenexa, Kansas.

Norbert was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, LuVerne Schmidt; sisters-in-law, Amy Schmidt and Virginia Schmidt; and brothers-in-law, George Bourke and Harlan Happel.

Visitation will be held on Monday, December 26, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Readlyn where the family will greet friends from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 27, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Klinger, rural Readlyn, Iowa. Burial will follow at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Klinger.
