LuVerne Henry Schmidt, 84, of Readlyn, Iowa, died on Thursday, February 14, 2013, at the NewAldaya Lifescapes in Cedar Falls.

LuVerne was born on June 9, 1928, in rural Readlyn, Iowa, the son of Otto and Norma (Poock) Schmidt. He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Klinger. He graduated from Readlyn High School. Following high school he worked at John Deere in Waterloo. He served from 1950-1952 in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

LuVerne was united in marriage to Amy Sonnack on May 22, 1954, in Waterloo, Iowa. After marriage the couple farmed and milked cows in the Readlyn area. In his early years of farming he helped Ed Steinbronn with carpentry work. In 2008, LuVerne retired from farming. Amy passed away on June 14, 2010.

He enjoyed golfing and playing cards with his friends. He looked forward to spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

LuVerne is survived by a son, Michael (Ramona) Schmidt of Waterloo, Iowa; a daughter, Cynthia (Michael) Sheehan of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and a son, Gary Schmidt of Phoenix, Arizona; two grandchildren, Angie Stephens, and Katie Sheehan; three step grandchildren, Holly Hanson, Stacy Hanson, and Ben Hanson, six great-grandchildren, Brody, Gina, Brenden, Makayla, Aaliyah, and Brayden, and three brothers, Roland Schmidt of Readlyn, Iowa, Norbert (Audrey) Schmidt of Readlyn, and Jerry (Karol) Schmidt of Hudson, Iowa; and a sister, Delores Bourke of Waverly, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife, Amy Ruth (Sonnack) Schmidt.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, February 18, 2013, at 10:30 am at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Klinger, rural Readlyn. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Klinger. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Wayne Teisinger V.F.W. Post #5661 of Readlyn. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Readlyn.
