(April 18, 1936 - December 19, 2016)

DANIEL L. BIRTWELL, 80 of Cherokee, Iowa passed away Monday evening, December 19, 2016 in the Cherokee Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 23rd at 10:30 a.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Pastor Mark Leeds will officiate. Burial will be in the Cedar Cemetery at Larrabee, Iowa. There will military rites at the cemetery by L.A. Wescott Post #2253 of the V.F.W. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. at the funeral home on Friday. Visitation will be on Thursday from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home. Online condolences can be left at www.boothbyfuneral.com.

Daniel was born on April 18, 1936 at Battle Creek, Iowa to Evin and Mary (Seibold) Keller. He was adopted as an infant by William and Loretta (Kenney) Birtwell. He grew up in the Mapleton area attending Mapleton Public Schools. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a corporal from 1954-1957, stationed at Oceanside, California and served overseas during the Korean Conflict.

He met Jean M. Chancellor through a pen pal program for servicemen and they were married on October 7, 1956 at Mason City, Iowa. Following the service, he worked for a sign company in Mason City, Iowa transferring to Spencer, Iowa in 1961 and then to Cherokee in 1962. He worked for Cherokee Cold Storage from 1964-1978 and then Cherokee Community Schools from 1978 until his retirement in June of 2001.

He was a faithful member of the Heritage Baptist Church since 2001 and before that he was an active member of Grace Baptist Church in Cherokee from 1966 to 2001 where he had held various offices in the church. He was a member of the V.F.W.

He enjoyed spending time with family and watching sports especially wrestling, the Andy Griffith Show and old westerns.

He was preceded in death by his birth parents and his adoptive parents, one son, Douglas L. Birtwell in infancy, three sisters, Crystal and husband Milton Vaughan, Arlene and husband Lloyd Stines, and Marilyn A. Keller in infancy.

He is survived by his wife Jean of Cherokee, Iowa, three children, Debra J. Birtwell of Lincoln, Nebraska, Diana K. and her husband Tim Knaack of Cherokee, and Daniel J. Birtwell of Cherokee, Iowa, five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter.
