Shortly after his military service, he met his wife, Lezeta Colene Teel, and they married in 1960. After working for General Telephone for several years while going to school, training, and interning, he begin his career as an instructor for the Texas Electrical Extension Service (TEEX) at Texas A&M University. There at A&M, he worked as a teacher/consultant from 1970-1999.
Upon retiring, he moved to Huntsville, Texas and continued working as an consultant for the University. Charles loved to fish, tell stories, talk politics, play Texas 42, and watch A&M athletics. Most of all, though, he loved his family and he loved his Lord. In the last couple of years, he spoke often of heaven, and died with his hope anchored on the redemptive work of Jesus on the cross.
As his cancer progressed, he moved to Yukon Oklahoma in 2014 to be near his family. He is survived by his wife, Lezeta, of Yukon, Oklahoma; one sister, Ruth McMillon of Bullhead City, AZ; two sons, Dwayne Guthrie and his wife Cindy of Oklahoma City, Doug Guthrie of Minneapolis, MN; four grandchildren, Travis Guthrie and his wife Reagan of Edmond, Oklahoma, Kristen Rivera and her husband Sergio of Oklahoma City, Caroline Guthrie of Oklahoma City, and Ethan Guthrie of College Station, Texas; seven great grandchildren, Lillyan, Hayden, Harper, Charlie, Josie, Hank and Gabriel. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and two brothers.
Memorial Service is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Tuesday December 27, 2016 at Matthews Funeral Home Chapel.
