Second wife was Harriet May (Shively Thurman) Carson. The city of Carson, California, was named for his father. From his obituary in the Torrance Herald, Dec. 10, 1961:

"Joseph N. Carson:
Requiem Mass was celebrated yesterday at Christ the King church for Joseph N. Carson, 86, owner of the old Dominguez Ranch and member of the pioneer California family responsible for the development of much of the Torrance and Harbor areas. Mr. Carson, who resided in Los Angeles, died Tuesday. He was the son of Victoria Dominguez and George Cady Carson, heirs of the wealthy Spanish dons who once owned much of the area. Until his retirement, he was an executive in Dominguez holdings. Burial was scheduled for the family plot in Calvary Cemetery."
