His last week of training was spent in guerrilla warfare exercises. During his guerrilla training, he lived under simulated Vietnam conditions for five days, fighting off night attacks and conducting raids on "enemy" villages. He was taught methods of removing booby traps, setting ambushes, and avoiding enemy ambushes. Other specialized training included small arms tactics, map reading, land mine warfare, communications, and firing the M-14 rifle, M-60 machine and 3.5-inch rocket launcher.

His training, which included five jumps from a C-130 Airplane flying 170 miles an hour at an altitude of 1,250 feet, qualified him as a parachutist. He also underwent strenuous physical conditioning.
MAXTON, NC: Funeral arrangements for Army PFC Sylvester E Conley Jr, who was with the 1st Brigade, 101st Airborne Division, and died March 10 of non-hostile causes on the hospital ship USS Repose off South Vietnam, will be held Sunday at 3pm in St Matthews A.M.E. Zion Church. The Reverend J. Maynor will be officiating. Military Rites will be conducted in the McLeod Cemetery. The body will be at the Cooper Funeral Home until after the service. PFC Conley was the son of of Sylvester E Conley Sr and Ada Graham Conley. He is also survived by his widow, Mrs Bertha Conley, and a daughter, Michelle of Plainfield, New Jersey; four brothers, William H. Conley of Plainfield, and Leonard, Charles, Ray and Earl, all of the home in Maxton.
