PFC Sylvester E Conley Jr, Vietnam Veteran, Born in Scotland County, he became a resident of Maxton, NC.

Private First Class Sylvester E Conley Jr was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Army, PFC Conley served our country until March 10th, 1968 in South Vietnam. He was 23 years old and was married. It was reported that Sylvester died from poisoning. He was born in Stewartsville, Scotland County, NC. His body was recovered. PFC Conley is on panel 44E, line 005 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for less than a year.

Conley and I are standing next to each other in the Platoon picture Nov 1967. We made it to Phu Bai in March of 68 and that was where Conley was killed by some Vietnamese civilians. Rest in Peace Airborne Brother, George Abram.

FT GORDON, GA: Army Private Sylvester E Conley Jr, 22, whose parents live at 219 Henderson Circle, Maxton, NC, completed nine weeks of advanced infantry training August 25th at Ft Gordon, GA. His last week of training was spent in guerrilla warfare exercises. During his guerrilla training, he lived under simulated Vietnam conditions for five days, fighting off night attacks and conducting raids on "enemy" villages. He was taught methods of removing booby traps, setting ambushes, and avoiding enemy ambushes. Other specialized training included small arms tactics, map reading, land mine warfare, communications, and firing the M-14 rifle, M-60 machine and 3.5-inch rocket launcher.

FT BENNING, GA: Army Private Sylvester E Conley Jr, 22, whose parents live at 219 Henderson Circle, Maxton, NC, received the Army Parachutist Badge September 22 upon completion of the Infantry Schools three-week airborne course at Ft Benning, GA. His training, which included five jumps from a C-130 Airplane flying 170 miles an hour at an altitude of 1,250 feet, qualified him as a parachutist. He also underwent strenuous physical conditioning.

MAXTON, NC: Funeral arrangements for Army PFC Sylvester E Conley Jr, who was with the 1st Brigade, 101st Airborne Division, and died March 10 of non-hostile causes on the hospital ship USS Repose off South Vietnam, will be held Sunday at 3pm in St Matthews A.M.E. Zion Church. The Reverend J. Maynor will be officiating. Military Rites will be conducted in the McLeod Cemetery. The body will be at the Cooper Funeral Home until after the service. PFC Conley was the son of of Sylvester E Conley Sr and Ada Graham Conley. He is also survived by his widow, Mrs Bertha Conley, and a daughter, Michelle of Plainfield, New Jersey; four brothers, William H. Conley of Plainfield, and Leonard, Charles, Ray and Earl, all of the home in Maxton.

He is the Son of Mr Sylvester E Conley Sr and Mrs Ada Graham Conley.

He served with 2nd Platoon, Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 327th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, "Screaming Eagles", USARV.

He was awarded The Combat Infantryman's Badge(CIB), The Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal.
