The youngest of six siblings born to Virgil and Willie Marie Maxwell, Jerry Dean Maxwell was born in Bakersfield after his family migrated from Oklahoma to Arvin, CA in the days of the Dust Bowl. An avid life-long sports lover, he attended East Bakersfield High where he excelled in baseball before graduating in 1958. High school is also where Jerry met his sweetheart Linda Hopkins, whom he married in 1960 and went on to raise two children with: Dena and Douglas. Following graduation, Jerry was employed by Southern Pacific Railroad as a draftsman, working his way up the ranks to District Manager of Rail Maintenance. He retired after 43 long years of hard work and dedication.

In 1978, Jerry and Linda completed construction of their dream home, a ranch on the outskirts of Bakersfield where they raised paint horses and became very active members of the Bakersfield Paint Horse Club. In addition to being their dream home, the ranch was also the perfect venue for many events with friends and family, from beloved family reunions to stunningly beautiful wedding ceremonies as Horse Haven Bridal Ranch. It was one on the most beautiful horse ranches and wedding venues in Bakersfield because of the constant love and elbow grease Jerry and Linda continually put into it. In 2014 they moved to Tehachapi CA, enjoying their new home with breath-taking views of the valley and daily wildlife encounters.

Jerry had a passion for Bluegrass music, teaching himself to play the mandolin and performing with multiple Bluegrass/Gospel/Country bands throughout the years. He was dedicated to entertaining the seniors at Rasmussen's Senior Center every Friday morning. He loved bringing joy unto their lives through old-time gospel country music. It was his way of serving the Lord, whom he knew and loved.

Jerry was diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis in August. He is survived by Linda, his wife of 56 years, his eldest brother Bill (Jane), daughter Dena Mojo (Jeff), three grandsons Christopher, Connor and Cory, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his son Douglas, grandson Kyle, parents and siblings Irma Thorson, Paul Maxwell (Billie), Betty Barker (Carl), and Jim Maxwell (Wanda).

Graveside services will be held at Greenlawn Cemetery on 3700 River Blvd, Saturday Dec 17 at 11:00 with a musical Celebration of his life to follow at St. John's Lutheran Church at 4500 Buena Vista Rd. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to St. John's Lutheran Church Missions Fund.
