My paternal second great-grandfather led a life to be proud of. Born into slavery on the land of Sandford HENDRIX to Elizabeth FOX and Perry SAUNDERS, he was a slave until the Civil War. In fact, he was known as Oliver HENDRIX until that time. He fought for the Union in both Co. B 121st USC Inf. and Co. H 13th USC H.A, leaving service at the rank of Corporal. He provided a living for his family by working in a sawmill, where he lost a finger. After losing his wife and the mother of his six children, he remarried in his sixties, and fathered two children. Ultimately, he succumbed to tetanus (likely from the severed finger) at the age of 62.
