The remains of Pfc Robert R Miller were never recovered after the Leopoldville was sunk by a torpedo in the English Channel on Christmas Eve in 1944. The 66th Infantry Division was enroute to the Battle of the Bulge.

Robert was the son of Lillian McKeague Miller (Walker) and James Pascal Miller. They were divorced before Robert was killed. The military did not want the public to know about the disaster on Christmas Eve, so they delayed notification to the families for some time. I don't know how long, but survivors were forbidden to write home about the sinking, and they were threatened with the loss of GI benefits.

After they divorced, Lillian married my great grandfather David Columbus Walker (after the death of my great grandmother, Maggie Presley Walker.) Lillian is buried in Walker Cemetery in Sharp's Chapel, Tenn., with Lum and Maggie and many of their children.

Lillian and David "Lum" Walker had one son together, and most of us knew him as Junior Walker. Lillian's son, James Woodrow Miller, married Lum's daughter, Edna, and they have a son named Robert Miller. I assume he's named for his uncle who lost his life in WWII, but I can't be certain.

Pfc Robert Miller is technically not kin to me, but he's kin to my kin, so I always felt a connection and a curiosity about him. I discovered recently that the Leopoldville Memorial on Fort Benning, Ga., has his name listed as one of the 493 who were never recovered.
