Willard Steere was born in Glocester, R.I., to Zebedee Steere and Mary Wood, whose other children were Enoch, Jonah, Daniel, Asa, Almond, Rachel and Elsie. Willard Steere married Chloe Thayer (born in Douglas, MA, to Otis Thayer Sr. and Sally Baker) in Douglas in 1825. They had six children. William, b. 1827, and Sally Almira, b. 1829, who both died in childhood and are buried at Baker Cemetery in Douglas. Surviving into adulthood were Emeline, b. 1832; Charles, b. 1836; Mary, b. 1837; and Willard (Jr.), b. 1839. Charles and Willard (Jr.) both served in the Civil War. Willard Sr. died in Burrillville, R.I., but was buried at Baker.
