Charles Smith Steere, son of Willard Steere of Glocester, R.I., and Chloe Thayer of Douglas, MA, was the brother of Willard Steere (Jr.), Emeline (Brown, Ballard, Mowry), and Mary Stanton. Charles was a boot treer in Elmira, N.Y. He served twice in the Civil War: a private in the 51st MA Inf., Co. K, (1862-63) and later a corporal in the 40th NJ Inf., Co. C, (1865). Charles married Anna Zahn of N.Y. on 8 Nov 1873, in Caton, N.Y. They had four children, Fannie, Alice, Girty and Alfred.

Researcher note: Charles last name appears in various records as Steers, Steer and Steere, with the last being the most common spelling. There are no records showing he ever served with the NY volunteers, but his pension application on file with NARA notes his service to MA & NJ.
