Katharine Mildred Kirkeby (Age 92) It is with great sadness and also joy we announce the passing of our Mom and grandmommy, Katharine Mildred Storaasli Kirkeby who passed away on January 3, 2007, in her home. Born December 19, 1914, in Spokane, WA, to George and Emma (Nelson) Storaasli, Katharine graduated from Grant Grade School and Lewis & Clark High School. She attended Kinman Business College and upon graduation worked for Hughes and Company for 60 years, retiring in 1985. Her passion for sports kept her on the tennis courts, golf courses, bowling alleys, and pool halls, and was a "pro" in all of them. In 1937, she married Donald Kirkeby and celebrated their 49th year of marriage before his death in 1986. Katharine is survived by her children Donald, Susan, and Russell; her grandchildren, Chris Kirkeby, Lisa Kirkeby, Tami Hensley and husband, Marc, Todd Smelcer (currently serving in Iraq) and his wife, Lisa, and great grandchildren, Brandon, Kjrsten, Nikk, Anna, and Taylor. She belonged to the Sons of Norway, Lakeland Village Association and Central Lutheran Church. A celebration was held in her memory at Greenwood Cemetery on Friday, January 5, 2007. In lieu of flowers, her wish was to have you take a friend out for a cup of coffee. To all of you who walked with Katharine to the fork in the road, thank you. What a journey it was. To her best friend, Spencer Hampton, who had a lunch date with her for 20 years with a promise to Donald Sr. he would take care of her until her passing, "Thanks from Papa". See you on the other side, Mom. HAZEN & JAEGER FUNERAL HOME, 1306 NORTH MONROE, SPOKANE, WASHINGTON, was entrusted with arrangements.
