James Thomas, age 32, noted "laborer", is found in brother William Wood's household with wife Malinda, age 26 and three children, believed their's, on 1850 Federal census, 12th District, Clarke county, Virginia, next listed is Robert Francis Tapscott and James' older sister Lucy Frances Wood with four kids. and mother, Elizabeth (Kirk) Wood age 79, three years before mother's death.

The U S 1870 Federal census has James in Winchester (Independent City in 1871), Frederick county, Virginia as a "laborer". Reportedy following his death, his widow, Malinda, and children moved to Baltimore, Maryland (Independent City in 1871).
