Martha (Pettit) Hicks is the daughter of James Pettit (1757-1846), whose family moved to Long Island about 1660 after initially settling in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1630. Her mother is Mary Ann (Sealey) Pettit. Martha married Richard Hicks (who was born abt 1792 and died in 1855).

The Pettit Cemetery where they were buried was on land purchased on 28 March 1826 by Martha (Pettit) Hicks' father, James Pettit. The Land was referred to as the "Parsonage Farm" since it was originally acquired by the Hempstead Church (later the Anglican Church of St. George in Hempstead) as a "glebe" or farm of a hundred acres which was leased to maintain the minister and pay for upkeep of the church building. [For background on Martha (Pettit) Hicks, her parents, and the Pettit Family Cemetery, see Robert R. King and Kay Atkinson King, "The Ancestry, Descendants, and Life of Ethan Pettit" (McLean, VA: American Society for Genealogy and Family History, 2016), pp. 86-118.]

Martha (Pettit) Hicks and Richard A. Hicks were the parents of two children according to the 1850 U.S. Census for Hempstead, Queens County, New York: (1) Adalia (Adalaide) Hicks, born about 1834 and (2) Royal Hicks, born about 1837. Royal A. Hicks' half brother James Wright was appointed administrator of the estate of Royal Hicks on 25 Jan 1858, and the probate records give Royal Hicks death date as 17 Dec 1857 in Hempstead. The surety for the bond given by James Wright was his uncle Asa Pettit, the brother of James Wright's and Royal Hicks' mother Martha (Pettit) Hicks. This information suggests that Martha Pettit was married to a Mr. Wright prior to her marriage to Richard A. Hicks. We have not located a marriage record or other information thus far to confirm this information.
