Salisbury's oldest citizen passes away - was in her 98th year - Leaves 38 great-grand children and 5 great-great-grand children - funeral this afternoon.
Mrs. Elmira L. SHUMAN, aged 98 years and 4 months, died at her home on East Inniss street last evening at 8'oclock after an illness of only a few days. Mrs Shuman was Salisbury's oldest citizen and was born June 4,1815, and has lived under thirteen Presidents of the United States, having been born during the incumbency of James Madison. She, together with Mrs. Barbara Gales, were the only living members, until her death last evening, of the Presbyterian church in this city at the time the late and much lamented Rev. J. Rumple became pastor of this church. She was married to John A. SHUMAN Oct 13,1844, and he died February 17,1875. To this union four children were born: Stephen A.,Fannie, Katie, and George, all of whom are dead. The following grandchildren are living; Mrs. P.M. CHILDRESS, of Oklahoma; Mrs. C. E. WHITAKER, of Washington,D.C.; Mrs. Claude GLADDEN, of Salisbury; Mrs. Sudie MORRIS, of Birmingham,Ala; Mrs. Ad. SWICEGOOD, of Spencer; Mrs. James PENNINGTON, of Spencer; Mr. W. A. THOMASON, of Salisbury; Mr. Archie SHUMAN, of Florida, and Mr. Edgar SHUMAN, of Salisbury. There are 38 living great grand children and 5 living great-great-grandchildren.
