Virginia Ann Grubbs was born on March 21, 1821 in Virginia, most likely in Frederick, VA. in the town of Middletown. Her first husband was William Lickliter and they lived in Licking County, Ohio. They were the parents of Hiram, Henry, Nancy, Angeline, Lavina and adopted daughter, Catherine Poe. After William's death, which happened before 1855, Virginia married Thomas Lewis Athey on March 19, 1855 and they were the parents of three sons, Alpheus (December 16,1856-1936), Marshall (July 28,1858-1936) and Willis (June 18,1863-1902). The latter, Willis, was a single man, living with his mother, when he was killed by a falling tree while cutting timber. His half-brother, Robert D. Athey, heard him cry out, and hurried to his assistance, but was horrified to find him lying beneath the tree, badly injured. Willis died three days later as the result of his injuries. His mother, Virginia, passed away almost three years after that, on December 20, 1905, at the age of 84, in Hutsonville, Crawford County, Illinois.
