A Fatal Injury

Last Wednesday, Willis Athey, a single man of about forty years, residing with his mother, Mrs. Virginia Athey, east of Annapolis, received injuries which terminated fatally. He was in the woods cutting timber and had felled a good sized tree, which lodged first on another, and then fell off, striking him and pinning him to the ground. His cries were heard by persons near a mile away, who came to his relief. When he was got out from under the body of the tree it was found an arm and a thigh were broken. He had also received internal injuries, which resulted in his death Friday morning.

He was the son of Virginia Grubs Lickliter Athey and her second husband, Thomas Lewis Athey.

He was killed by a falling tree. His brother, Robert D. Athey heard him cry out, and hurried to his assistance, but was horrified to find him lying beneath the tree, badly injured, and he died three days later as the result of his injuries, on January 10, 1902.

Quite a sad accident occurred Wednesday morning west of town. Willis Athey was felling a tree and the top lodged in another tree, then flew back catching Athey and pinning him to the ground, breaking and mashing his right leg above the knee and breaking his left arm. His suffering was intense till death relieved him Friday morning.
