The first child of Simon Elgie Sr. (1784-1876) and Margaret Chapman (1786-1860) he was born in the hamlet of Little Langton, Yorkshire and baptized October 20th, 1811 at Great Langton. He was married to Rachel Johnson about November 1839 and the marriage was recorded in the North Allerton Registration District. They are found on the 1841 Census at Danby Wiske, Yorkshire where he is farming and by 1851 they are at Northallerton where he is running the Black Swan Inn there.
