Rodney Lane, 84, of Meckling, S.D., met his Heavenly Father November 24, 2016 at the Wakonda Heritage Manor in Wakonda, S.D.

Rodney Leonard Lane, the son of Arthur and Edna (Clark) Lane was born on August 26, 1932. He attended country school and grade school in the Gayville area until moving to Vermillion. Rodney’s military service began in 1950 with the U.S. Army Infantry where he served in Alaska during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1952.

He was united in marriage to Marian “Dorothy” Milbrodt on June19, 1959 at the St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church near Akron, IA. To this union they were blessed with one daughter, Naomi Ruth. The family lived in Vermillion for four years, and then they later made Meckling their home for the past 52 years.

Over the years, Rodney worked for construction and concrete businesses, and he retired after numerous years as a skilled house painter for Terry Turner Painting Co in 1997.

Rodney was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He was a member of the Gayville Lutheran Church.

He enjoyed woodworking and shared this gift with his family. Rodney even built his own fishing boat which he put to good use on the Missouri River. He spent many summers sharing the joy of camping and fishing with his daughter.

Rodney was also an avid hunter of pheasant, duck, and especially loved to bowhunt for deer. From the time he was a young boy on the family’s produce farm, he continued his passion of gardening. Rodney was the happiest enjoying the quiet beauty of God’s nature.

Rodney was a kind and humble man and was adored by his family. Left to cherish his memory is his devoted wife of 57 years, Dorothy, of Meckling, SD; a daughter, Naomi, and her husband, Michael Holtz, of Merrill, IA; and his beloved granddaughters, Michaela and Josie. He is also survived by his brother Marlin (Jan) Lane of Yankton, SD; sister, Marcia Daniels of Sioux Falls, SD; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Edna; one brother, Kenneth; and sisters Leona (Herman) Holmes, Verna (Elmer) Bursell, Donna (Dale) Bye, and Diane (Ralph) Kavanaugh.
