The family will receive friends 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 27, 2016 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Northeast Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, November 28, 2016, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Northeast Chapel. Burial with full military honors will follow the service at Fort Jackson National Cemetery.
Born August 4, 1945, in Wilson, NC, Ernest “Gene” was raised an Air Force brat, growing up his school life included: NC, SC, VA, FL, MD, AK, PA, NY, IN, TX, CA, NV, IL, HI, NM, GA and AL. At an early age, he enlisted in the US Army, beginning his career in the Vietnam Conflict; he would serve his country honorably for 20 years and become a lifetime member of the American Legion and DFW. He enjoyed his travels throughout the years to; Singapore, BIT Indian Ocean, Formosa Island, Midway Island, Johnson Island, Guam, Japan, Laos Burma, Cambodia, Thailand, Germany, England , France, Holland, Hong Kong and Mexico.
After retirement, he continued his career in the Hotel, Food and Restaurant Management with NAS Whiting Field, Milton, Fla and later alongside his brothers they owned Core Sounds Surf and Turf Restaurant in Goldsboro, NC. As partner of Cunningham & Ellis Insurance Agency, he would always say “I like to think I am helping someone out”. An avid baseball, football, racing fan and collector, he enjoyed trips to Las Vegas though he never would win. Having a thirst for knowledge his favorite shows were National Geographic and the History Channels and he readily shared all that he would learn. His bark was loud but had the softest heart, a lover, a giver, optimistic and strong willed, he was a friend to everyone.
In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by a brother, Jeffrey Ellis.
Survivors include his wife, Araceli G. Ellis, children, Leann Hughes(Robert), Rodney G. Nicandro (Nicole), grandchildren; Joshua, Larry Jr., Chelby, Jameson, Kholby, Nate, Riley and a brother, Paul Ellis (Renee).
The Ellis family is full of gratitude to all of their family and friends for their love, compassion and support as well as the staff of Baptist Hospital ICU/II CU for their excellent care, compassion and understanding of their needs. They are deeply touched by Dr. Steven Minter of SCOA for caring for Gene as he would his own family. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Multiple Myeloma, PO Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718.
