Sophia Louisa (Delaplaine) Aiken (10 Jan 1826-12 Jun 1845) was the daughter of John Delaplaine (10 Aug 1793-10 Feb 1868) and Sophia (Charlton) (10 Jan 1796-30 Aug 1875).
John was a merchant living in Middleburg. He married Sophia in1818 who was the daughter of John U. Charlton and Elizabeth (Beatty). They & children arelisted in Carroll Co. 1850 census. The stone house they lived in sold 1857.

The Family of John and Sophia (Charlton):
John Delaplaine (1793-1868), older son of Joshua and Mary, married the socially prominent Sophia Charlton whose lineage is given from the records of Mary (Keller) Markell. Since they had many daughters, but no sons, they did not perpetuate the Delaplaine name. A number of their daughters married very well. Cornelia and Anna did not marry.
Sophia (Charlton) came from a prominent family, among the first to be landowners in the Monocacy area. When Henry Munday, a leader with Cresap in defense of MD settlements on the western shores of the Susquehanna River, was arrested in 1736 and taken to Phila., documents seized from him by PA officials included 7 application of the Charltons for land. Capt. Charlton was an associate of Maj. Munday who was godfather to Thomas, son of John Charlton. John Charlton was appointed overseer in 1750 of the road from Frederick to Dulany Mill. In 1752, Alice Charlton purchased lot 91 in Frederick from Robert Mark (wife Catherine). In her will, probated in 1761, Alice left her estate to children Lettie Ferguson (wife of John), Thomas, Arthur, John, Janet, Alice Fleming (wife of Samuel), Jane, Isabella, and Mary. Alice left money for purchase of a Bible for use of her sons John and Thomas. Eleanor, Henry, and John Charlton were involved in Frederick Co. deeds in 1762-1773. Arthur Charlton in will of 1771 left his house and 3 lots in Frederick to his wife Eleanor. They had children: Alice m. Casper Shaaf and had son Arthur; Elinor m. Murdock; Mary; Usher; Anne. Arthur had 6 deeds recorded in 1761 to 1770 in Frederick Co. Later the spelling of the family name changed and we find wills of Thomas Carlton in 1827 and Mary Carlton in 1835.
Sophia (Charlton) was not only a descendant of the leading pioneer Charlton family of the Monocacy Valley. Her aunt was Sophia Beatty, wife of Col. Nathaniel Rochester (1752-1831), leader in early Hagerstown and founder of Rochester, NY according to Ella Beam and J. T. Scharf. In early life Nathaniel was associated with Col. Hart in Hagerstown in the manufacture of flour, rope, and nails. Hart was the father of Lucretia Hart who married Henry Clay. At Hagerstown, Col. Rochester was a postmaster, judge, member of the MD Assembly, and founder of a bank. About 1810, he moved to western NY state.
