Major League Baseball Player, Coach. For six seasons (1945 to 1950), he was a pitcher with the Boston Red Sox. Born David Meadow Ferriss, he attended Shaw High School in Mississippi and later earned a scholarship to play collegiate baseball at Mississippi State University. He was signed as an amateur free agent by Boston in 1942, however the start of his professional career was delayed while he served with the United States Army Air Force during World War II. Ferriss marked his Major League debut on April 29, 1945 and went on to win 21 games that season. He set a then Major League record of 22 scoreless innings pitched at the start of his career in 1945. The following year (1946), he bettered his rookie season with a remarkable 25 wins and during the course of that year, he set a Major League record with his streak of 13 consecutive wins at his home ballpark (Fenway Park). Additionally, he earned all star status that season (1946). The Red Sox captured the American League Pennant that year (1946) and Ferriss recorded a shutout win in two games pitched against the St. Louis Cardinals during the 1946 World Series. Unfortunately for Ferriss, what could have been a Hall of Fame career declined rapidly, when he suffered a severe shoulder injury during the 1947 season. In 144 career regular season games, he compiled a 65 win, 30 loss record with a lifetime 3.64 ERA, in 880 innings pitched. In addition to pitching, Ferriss was a standout batter and recorded 93 hits with a career .250 batting average. Following his playing career, he served as a coach with the Boston Red Sox from 1955 until 1959. He went on to serve as coach of the Delta State University Baseball Team and guided them to several conference titles. He was inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame 1961 and was enshrined into the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2002.
