SSG Samuel Bess was a member of the Army, SSG Bess served our country until November 3rd, 1965 in South Vietnam. He was 28 years old and was married. It was reported that Samuel died from small arms fire or grenade. Samuel fought in the Ia Drang Valley during the Pleiku campaign in October and November 1965.His body was recovered. SSG Bess is on panel 03E, line 014 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for 10 years.
He leaves behind his wife Shirley, 4 children, 3 girls one boy. His grandson is named in his honor. When he left he told his family that he would never see NC again. He played the drums well.
He served with Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division(AMBL), USARV.
He was awarded The Combat Infantryman's Badge(CIB), The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, The Vietnam Service Medal, Bronze Star, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal and The Good Conduct Medal(s).
