Henry married on 20 December 1847 at St. Brandon, Brancepeth, Durham to Hannah Dowson (1819-1889) a native of Middleton-in-Teesdale, County Durham, the d/o Matthew Dowson & his wife Elizabeth nee Watson.
Henry & Hannah had seven children – Thomas (1849-1921); Elizabeth (1851-1851); Matthew (1851-1911); Elizabeth (aka Hannah Elizabeth -1854-1878); Dorothy (1857-1862); Henry (1859-1938); William (1863-1906).
He died on 26 May 1901 at East Castle Colliery, Lanchester aged 81 years, and was buried on 29 May 1901.

"In memory of ELIZABETH daughter of Henry and Hannah Gatiss, died at Burnopfield, February 22nd 1878 aged 23 years. Also DOROTHY their daughter died August 30th 1862, aged 5 years. Also the above HANNAH GATISS. Died Feby. 24th 1889, aged 70 years. Also the above HENRY GATISS, who died May 26th 1901 aged 82 years."
