Henry Gatiss was born in 1820 at Eighton Banks, the second son of Thomas Gatiss, a pitman, & a native of Biddick, Durham & his wife Dorothy nee Stodart, native of Bainsley Lane, Lamesley, County Durham.
He was baptised on 12 November 1820 at St. Andrew, Lamesley by John Collinson, Curate.
His siblings were Thomas Henry (1819-1891); Margaret (1821-1877); John (1824-1911); Ann (1827-c1873); Luke (1829-1871); Richard (1832-1843); George Moore (1834-1869);
Henry married on 20 December 1847 at St. Brandon, Brancepeth, Durham to Hannah Dowson (1819-1889) a native of Middleton-in-Teesdale, County Durham, the d/o Matthew Dowson & his wife Elizabeth nee Watson.
Henry & Hannah had seven children – Thomas (1849-1921); Elizabeth (1851-1851); Matthew (1851-1911); Elizabeth (aka Hannah Elizabeth -1854-1878); Dorothy (1857-1862); Henry (1859-1938); William (1863-1906).
He died on 26 May 1901 at East Castle Colliery, Lanchester aged 81 years, and was buried on 29 May 1901.
