A US Senator from Alabama; born September 22, 1786; probably in South Carolina; received a classical education; studied law; admitted to the bar; moved to Tennessee where he practiced law and became a judge; moved to Alabama in 1818 and commenced practice in Huntsville; elected as a Democratic Republican (later Jacksonian Democrat) to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of John W. Walker and served from December 12, 1822, to March 3, 1825; member, State house of representatives 1825, 1827, serving as speaker in 1825; moved to New Orleans, La., in 1830 and died there on August 24, 1834.
