Mr. Newman served in the U.S. Air Force attaining the rank of Captain after the European Theater of Operation in N. Africa, in WWII.
As a self-taught business man, he started several companies including Heating & Air, Cleaning Supply, and for 30 years was founder and owner of Launder House/ White House cleaners.
Mr. Newman served for four years in the Augusta City Council, 1965-1968, and then became Mayor, 1973-1981.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his son; Lewis “Buz” Newman, siblings; Donald Newman, Roscoe Newman, Harry Newman, Dorothy “Dot” Nowell, and granddaughter; Melodie Newman.
Survivors include his son; William “Billy” Newman and wife Karen of FL, daughters; Adele Damiano and husband Frank of Augusta, GA, Betsy McLean of FL, five grandchildren, five great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren, and many special nieces and nephews.
