Lewis “Pop” A. Newman, 97, entered into rest on Sunday, November 20, 2016. He was the fifth child born to Morgan and Nora Newman on April 18, 1919 in Augusta, GA. Married to Ouida “Teeny” Tucker Newman for 71 years until her death in 2013.
Mr. Newman served in the U.S. Air Force attaining the rank of Captain after the European Theater of Operation in N. Africa, in WWII.
As a self-taught business man, he started several companies including Heating & Air, Cleaning Supply, and for 30 years was founder and owner of Launder House/ White House cleaners.
Mr. Newman served for four years in the Augusta City Council, 1965-1968, and then became Mayor, 1973-1981.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his son; Lewis “Buz” Newman, siblings; Donald Newman, Roscoe Newman, Harry Newman, Dorothy “Dot” Nowell, and granddaughter; Melodie Newman.
Survivors include his son; William “Billy” Newman and wife Karen of FL, daughters; Adele Damiano and husband Frank of Augusta, GA, Betsy McLean of FL, five grandchildren, five great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren, and many special nieces and nephews.
