Author. Born Laura Reichental in New York, Riding was a representative of the modernism style in the poetic group known as "The Fugitives." In 1925, she began a tragic and controversial literary-sentimental relationship with the writer Robert Graves. Both settled in the small town of Deià in Majorca, until the Riding's return to the United States in 1939. In 1991, she was awarded the Bollingen Prize for her lifetime contribution to poetry. Her many works include poems, novels, essays and short stories such as "The Close Chaplet," "Progress of Stories," "A Pamphlet Against Anthologies" and "A Survey of Modernist Poetry." Also, she signed her works under the pen-names of Laura Riding Gottschalk and Laura Jackson.
