Robert Allen Abel was born in the area of Landsdowne, later known as Kopp, Virginia, which is no a part of the Marine Corps Base, Quantico. Robert worked as a boatman, according to the 1860 U.S. Census.

Robert enlisted in Company F, 49th Virginia Infantry. CSA on 1861. Detailed as a carpenter at Manassas in December 1861 and as a courier for Col. Anderson, Commandant of the post at Manassas in January 1862.

Robert married Nettie Elizabeth Wright on 2 Feb 1870 in Prince William County, Virginia. The marriage is listed in the book, "Prince William County Virginia Marriages 1854-1938, copyright 2002 by Ron Turner.

Robert is listed as a farmer in the 1880 U.S. Census for the Coles District of Prince William County, Virginia. Robert and his wife Nettie were baptized by Rev Lynn of the Belle Haven Missionary Baptist Church in Kopp, Virginia in November of 1885.

One of Ron Turner's books on businesses of Prince William County lists Robert as a merchant with a retail tobacco license in 1897. He is also listed as a resident of the Coles District of Prince William County in 1900.

Robert passed on 19 June, 1903 and is buried in the front left corner of the Belle Haven Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery in the former community of Kopp, Virginia, aboard the Marine Corps Base, Quantico.


Robert and Nettie Abel were two of the six founding members of Belle Haven Missionary Baptist Church of December 20, 1885.
