Andrew O. Ulven was born on September 19, 1874, the son of Ole and Elise Ulven in Adams Township, 1-1/4 miles north of Adams. He was baptized in the Little Cedar Lutheran Church by Rev. J. Mueller Eggen. Sponsors were Ole Erie and Andrew Anderson. (Church birth records list his birth date as 10/3/1874). He attended the local school. On May 30, 1889, he was confirmed by Rev. Eggen. He helped his brother haul cream for quite some time. He also worked on farms around Adams and Taopi.

On January 17, 1897, he was united in marriage to Henriette Osmundson of Marshall Township. To this union was born one son, Joel. They lived for 17 years on a farm north of Taopi. They then moved to Adams village where they lived for one year until the new buildings on their farm one mile north of Adams were completed. After living on this farm for several years, they moved into the village of Adams in 1922. While on the farm, Andrew drove a school bus for a few years, and as also substitute mail carrier for several years. After they moved to Adams, Andrew drove a tank wagon for the Farmers Independent Oil Company of Adams. Later, together with Peter Goergen, Andrew built a service station which is still on the same location. After continuing in this partnership for several years, Joel purchased Mr. Goergen's half interest in the station.

In 1924, Andrew and his son Joel organized and built a bulk plant in the Village of Adams and handled their own products. Starting with one tank wagon, they soon added another, and built a new station in Elkton and a new service station and garage in LeRoy, which they operated until they sold their business in 1952 to the Osmundson Brothers. It was then that Andrew retired from business.

He has enjoyed good health, outside of twice when he underwent major surgery. He remained in good health until last summer. Last October when he was visiting his sisters in St. Paul, he became ill and was taken to St. Olaf Hospital at Austin. He was released on November 3, 1956. Because of the spread of cancer through his entire body, there was very little that could be done for him. Throughout this time he was lovingly cared for by his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Joel Ulven.

On January 17, 1947, Mr. and Mrs. Ulven were honored at a special observance in honor of their Golden Wedding. A large numnber of relatives and friends came to honor them at this observance which was held at the Little Cedar Lutheran Church, where he has been a life-long member.

In August, 1955, Andrew moved with his son and family to LaCrosse, Wisconsin, where he passed away on Sunday, February 10, 1957, at the age of 82 years, 5 months, and 9 days. Mrs. Ulven passed away September 9, 1953.

He leaves to mourn his passing one son Joel, and grandson, Ronald of Owatonna, Minnesota. Also two sisters, Mrs. T.O Fitzsimmons (Elise) and Miss Sophie Ulven of St. Paul, Minnesota. In addition there are a host of other friends and relatives in Adams, Austin, and vicinity.

He was preceded in death by 4 brothers, Erick, Ole A., Ole E., and Olaus, and one sister Caroline.

He will be remembered as a great man and a friend to all who knew him. Funeral services were held on Thursday, February 14 from the Worlein Funeral Home, Austin, and the Little Cedar Lutheran Church, Adams, M.L. Witte, officiating.
