Phyllis Laber, born in 1921, the granddaughter of Scottish immigrants, (family: Lees, Clan: Macpherson) was the youngest daughter of Flossie and Joseph Lees. Her twin sister, Alice, who maintained a presence throughout mom's life, died at birth. She had two brothers, John and Gordon and a sister Esther who preceded her to heaven. She married her late husband Victor Laber in 1941 and throughout her life shared her infinite love with him and her surviving daughters; Vickie Brown (William), and Janella Goy (Rodney, deceased), son Philip (Winifred), her cherished grandchildren; Julie Pryor (Corey Sr.), Christopher Brown, Rhett Goy (Mindy), Ryan Goy (Andrea), Evan Laber (Ashley) and Christien Laber. She was blessed with 11 great grandchildren including: Jaelynn, Ciera, and Corey (Jr.) Pryor; Nolan Brown; Adalie, Alexa, and Gannon Goy; Ashley, Grant and Alyssa Goy; and Jessica Laber, loving each equally.

Her faith in Christ, devotion to family and community service represented the emphases of her life. Phyllis contributed to the Oakland United Church of Christ community through participation in the choir, repeatedly teaching Sunday School and Bible School, and contributions to various church organizations. She was a long-time member of the Order of the Eastern Star rising to the local office of Worthy Matron. Later in her life she participated in Bible groups at Fox Run and Hillcrest Assisted Living facilities where she continued to guide and positively influence the lives of her friends and young Elderly Assistants and nursing staff who were responsible for her daily care.

Mom enjoyed annual family vacations to Rocky Mountain National Park and to rugged western Wyoming to visit Esther and her husband Bud. She had a very creative spirit expressed, in her limited spare time, through various self-directed craft projects. This lady did not need a recipe book and excelled at baking the lightest thirteen egg white Angel Food Cake, burnt sugar and other cakes and banana cream pie, soft and tender dinner and cinnamon rolls; and the most savory meats with all the trimmings and side dishes. There are just too many culinary accomplishments to mention. At her final Hillcrest Residence in Papillon, she continued to guide and nurture, by teaching the staff to make pastries including her yummy chocolate chip cookies. That recipe is now part of the Hillcrest cookbook.

There was joy and laughter in her Oakland home when the neighborhood women, including Lee Knudsen, Nancy Perkins, Betty Cummings and others would gather to exercise with Jack LaLanne on TV, ironically followed with coffee and her sweet rolls. She enjoyed her many visits to Malvern, Iowa, Jackson, Michigan, Eagle River, Wisconsin and Maryville, Missouri to visit her children and support her grandchildren in their various activities. She was sustained in later years by the many visits from great grandchildren to her assisted living residences. Through gentle kindness she made many friends in Oakland, Malvern, where she lived following dad's passing, Fox Run in Council Bluffs and finally Hillcrest. Although Phyllis outwardly appeared to be quiet, her thoughts ran deep, she loved intensely and possessed a strong will to live life to its fullest. Her life can be summarized as one of integrity and grace; she gave freely and asked very little from others. We are at peace knowing Mom/Phyllis has achieved the "Promise" of life everlasting in heaven.
