King enrolled on June 24 and mustered into Co. K of the 8th U.S. Colored Heavy Artillery at Paducah, Kentucky on June 25, 1864. He suffered a gunshot wound to his right leg at Paducah in October 1864. King developed piles during a march to Victoria, Texas. He mustered out at Victoria on February 10, 1866.

King married Ann Kennedy in Livingston County, Kentucky in 1867 with Rev. Thompson officiating. Ann was born in Kentucky about 1848. Children of King and Ann included Margaret J., Ida, Elizabeth, Laura and Arilda. In 1870 the family lived in Smithland Precinct, Livingston County where King was a farm worker. He moved to Black Township, Posey County by 1894. Six years later King was a widower who lived on East 3rd Street in Mt. Vernon. He was then a day laborer.
