William Sears was a cooper and sea captain; he owned the first tavern in Bridgton, Maine which was later called Pondicherry House. Contributed by FG Volunteer, Kay (#47019646).

In 1789, William Sears, of Beverly Mass., purchased the two lots on Stevens' Brook, comprising the older part of the village of Bridgton, and erected a grist-mill below the saw-mill at the outlet of Crotched Pond. He also erected the first tavern in the village, on the corner opposite the Bridgton House. [pg 13]
