Nellie Thomas Wiser, 93, passed peacefully in her sleep, May 23, 2011. Nellie was born to Stephen and Mecie Thomas, Jan. 26, 1918, in Amelia, Va. The eldest of nine children, Nellie was a resident of Richmond, Va., until 1954 when she and her family moved to Norfolk.

For 17 years, Nellie was employed with the Department of Navy, Norfolk Naval Station Police. She was also a devoted member of Glenwood Park Presbyterian Church for more than 20 years.

In the mid-70s, Nellie and her husband moved to Meadows of Dan, Va., where she enjoyed a remarkably vibrant retirement for more than 30 years that included avid participation in both public service and her spiritual community.

In additional to a steady stream of volunteer activities through the years, she served on the board of directors for Laurel Fork Health Clinic, as ambulance driver for Patrick County Rescue Squad, and as elder for Mayberry Presbyterian Church, also in Patrick County.

Nellie was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Handy Otis Wiser. She is survived by sisters, Mabel Thomas Childress and Dorothy Thomas Spense; brother-in-law, Okema Spense; daughter, Patsy Wiser Moler, son-in-law, Dr. Cleve Moler, of Santa Fe, N.M.; granddaughters, Carolyn Cline Franco of Washington, D.C., and Byerly Wiser Cline of Boston.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mayberry Presbyterian Church, 1127 Mayberry Church Road, Meadows of Dan, VA 24120 or to your favorite charity in her honor.
