RECENT ARRIVAL TO CITY EXPIRES OF APPENDICITIS
James Franklin Reed, who had engaged in ranching and mining in Colorado during the more active years of his life, and resided in Oroville, Butte county and Grass Valley during the past five years, died at 11:26 o'clock last Wednesday night.
Reed, a resident of this city for the past seven months at 229 Mill street, was taken to the sanitarium last Tuesday evening, suffering considerable pain from an appendicitis attack. An operation by Dr. Richard P. Landis disclosed that the appendix had exploded and that a gangrene condition existed.
Had the deceased man lived until the 25th day of the present month, he would have been 82 years of age. He was a native of Kentucky, but had spent the greater part of his life in Colorado where many family members remain. About five years ago he took up residence with a daughter at Oroville and continued to this city about seven months ago, purchasing the home at 238 Mill street.
Deceased was the father of three sons: D. J. Reed, Oroville; B. F. Reed, Denver, Colorado; Richard C. Reed, Grass Valley; one daughter, Mrs. E. O. Nichols, Oroville; brother to: Albert and Elijah Reed, Denver, Colorado; Lorie Reed, Basin, Wyoming; Mrs. Jennie Berryman and Mrs. Dora Shockley, Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Funeral services will be held at the chapel of the W. R. Jefford and Son Funeral Parlors at 10 o'clock on Saturday morning, February 17. Rev. A. L. Pratt will be the officiating clergyman. Commitment will be made at Greenwood Cemetery

COLORADO PIONEER DIES
The following article was clipped front a Denver paper the fore part of the week, but no other information is available. No arrangements have as yet been made for the burial here as stated. Mr. Reed resided here many years prior to moving to California a few years ago:
James Franklin Reed, 82, a Colorado pioneer and Indian fighter, died Thursday in Grass Valley, Calif., according to word received Friday by his son, Attorney Boswell F. Reed of 429 East Fourteenth avenue. The body will be taken to Cedaredge, Colo., for burial. Mr. Reed came to Colorado in a covered wagon from Kentucky in the '60s. He settled near where the town of Elbert now stands. Later he moved to Mesa county, where he engaged in the sheep and cattle business. He also was interested in mining. He is survived by his son here and two other sons, B. F. and R. C. Reed, and one daughter, Mrs. Jeanette Nichols, all of Grass Valley, Calif.

* The informant on Mr. Reed's death certificate was his son, Richard C. Reed.
James Reed had three living children in close proximity. Son Richard and several other family members are also buried here in Greenwood.
His birth is given as 25 Feb 1852 and states that his parents were Elijah and Mary, both born KY, and that James Reed himself was born KY.

[ * From Hooper and Weaver Mortuary - Unfortunately the 30s decade was lost in the fire years ago and the hard files don't go back that far. Sorry. ☹ ]
In the Colorado obit, son Boswell says the body "will be shipped to Colorado". His wife is interred there. But Richard is in Grass Valley and that obit says he "will be interred in Greenwood" and the marker is in Greenwood.
6/22/2021 Tanner at Cedaredge Cemetery spent a great deal of time with me regarding this. They actually have the 1927 hard copy of the burial for Louisa. But they have NO record of James. The plot to one side is vacant. To the other side, occupied. NO record of adding James into Louisa's plot. I believe it was thought that they would bring James back to Colorado, but it didn't work out that way. (And his marker was botched. Like his brother, Elijah's marker, that says Elyah).

Gravesite Details

The marker is WRONG. The numbers are all there, but in the wrong order. It happens more than you'd think. See photo caption.
