From The Adams Review, 1901:
Killed by the Cars. A sad and unfortunate accident occurred last Friday night about 11:15, two miles west of town, at which time and place Ole E. Erie was killed by being struck by what is known as the meat train No.69.

Mr. Erie had left town about 10 o'clock to walk home, he living one mile west of the Norwegian church, walking up the track. The engineer of the train states that after the train had cleared the switches he began looking after some of the machinery of the engine and when at a point about opposite the church looked ahead and saw a man walking on the track only a few feet in front of the engine. Before a signal of any kind could be given the pilot of the engine struck the man, nearly severing one foot and cutting a deep gash in the back of his head. The train was stopped as soon as possible and backed to the depot. Dr. Maercklein and several others hastily repaired to the scene and found Mr. Erie some 60 feet from the track partially imbedded in a snow drift. The coroner Hollister, of Austin, notified, who arrived here on the morning freight. As the facts were very plain no inquest was deemed necessary.

Mr. Erie was born in Norway about 52 years ago and came to America when he was about 18 years of age (1866) locating in Wisconsin. While there he married and moved to this county where he has resided ever since. He leaves a widow and 12 children. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon in the Norwegian church, Rev. Rasmussen conducting the services.

The widow and fatherless children have the heartfelt sympathy of all in their sad and unfortunate bereavement.
