Wells was married to Laura Irene [Blakeslee] Palmer. Both lived and are buried in Pierce City with six of their ten children. They had traveled with the Blakeslee family in horse-drawn wagons from Erie, Pa. to settle in Southwest Missouri in 1880. Wells was originally from North Brookfield, Madison County, New York where many of his family lived.
Wells and his brother George were Union veterans of the Civil War. He repeatedly petitioned the federal government for a veteran's pension for his service in the Navy aboard the USS Brilliant a tin-clad, stern-wheel gunboat operating on the Mississippi & Ohio Rivers.
His youngest child was born when he was 64 years old. He lived to a considerable age for the times and continued working as a teamster to provide for his family despite his elderly condition. He and many of his children share common names with his relatives from New York. He was the son of Ira & Lydia, he had siblings Ira & Lydia and children Ira & Lydia.
