DEATH OF SIR JOHN DOUGLAS, GCB
The death is announced of General Sir John Douglas, GCB, which took place on Thursday afternoon at Ardentinny, Loch Long. His father was Lieutenant-General Sir Neil Douglas, KCB. Sir John was born in 1817. He received his education at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, and entered the army in 1833. In 1841 he became a Captain, and was promoted to be Major in 1842, Lieut-Colonel in 1854, Colonel, 1857; Major-General, 1880. He retired in the following year. In the Crimean campaign he commanded the 79th Highlanders, and also in the Indian Mutiny campaign. For his services in the latter he was thanked by the Governor-General of India, and created KCB. His title is GCB dates from 1877. He was for some time Commander of the Forces in Scotland. He married in 1843 Lady Elizabeth Cathcart, daughter of the second Earl of Cathcart.
